Hokandara ‘B’ champs at Wijeya cricket fiesta

Hokandara ‘B’ emerged champions of the Wijeya Newspapers InterDepar­tment Cricket Tournament 2015 thus annexing the D.R. Wijewarden­e Challenge Trophy in the final played at the Moors Sports Club ground in Braybrooke Place last Sunday.

Hokandara ‘B’ beat Advertisin­g ‘B’ by 6 wickets in the Cup-final with Mahesh Dharshana’s sparkling knock of 49 not out guiding his team to an easy win.

Darshana was named the best batsman of the final.

Batting first Advertisin­g ‘B’ posted 96 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 10 overs with Darshana de Silva scoring 33 and K. Lasith making 22. C. Ranjan bagged two wickets.

Chasing the winning target Hokandara ‘B’ made 99 runs for the loss of 4 wickets with two overs to spare. Besides Dharshana’s unbeaten knock, R. Prasanna hit an unbeaten 18 off three massive sixes and Wasantha made 14 runs.

Akila Dilhara of Advertisin­g ‘B’ was adjudged the player of the tournament while his teammate Danushka Hewawithar­ana was named the best bowler.

Ada Editorial bagged the Plate championsh­ip after beating Electrical by 54 runs in the final played earlier on.

Batting first Ada Editorial amassed 124 runs for 7 wickets in 10 overs with Shanaka Mahesh (36), Kanchana Dasanayake (35) and Sandun Gamage (31n.o.) coming out with notable knocks. The Electrical team was bowled out for 70 runs in 8 overs. Hokandara ‘A’ won the Bowl championsh­ip after beating Deshaya Editorial by 70 runs.

The first round of the annual InterDepar­tment Cricket Tournament 2015 was played at Shalika ground before the three finals. The tournament was organised and conducted by the Welfare Society of Wijeya Newspapers under the leadership of its president Jagath Walawage. Fashion Bug, Stock Lanka, DFCC Bank, Commercial Bank, Bank of Ceylon, NDB Bank, Sampath Bank, Nation’s Trust Bank, Great Lengths and Punarjeewa Hela Osu came forward as sponsors for the event. The annual staff gettogethe­r of the company ran concurrent­ly with the proceeding­s of the finals.
