St. Joseph’s dominate Schools Cager Tourney

St. Joseph’s College dominated the 3rd Invitation­al Schools Basketball Tournament for Under15 and Under-13 spikers organised and conducted by Vidura College at their premises in Thalawathu­goda. The Josephians took credit for the whole show they dished out, winning both age categories.

Under-15 and Under-13 teams representi­ng St. Joseph’s. Wesley, Carey, Dharmapala Pannipitiy­a, St. Joseph’s Boys’ School Nugegoda, Prince of Wales’ and hosts Vidura took part in the tournament.

In the Under- 15 category St. Joseph’s beat Dharmapala Pannipitiy­a after a grueling battle. The finalists St. Joseph’s and Dharmapala Pannipitiy­a, beat Carey and Vidura respective­ly in the semi-finals. Vidura beat Carey in the third place playoff. Dinushan de Mel of St. Joseph’s was named the Best Player of the Tournament.

In the Under- 13 category St. Joseph’s went on to beat Wesley in another thriller. The third place playoff, after a nail biting tie breaker St. Joseph’s BS Nugegoda pipped Vidura to walk out winners. St. Joseph’s and Wesley beat Vidura and St. Joseph’s BS in the semifinals. Janith Fernandopu­lle of St. Joseph’s BS Nugegoda was named the Best Player of the Tournament in this category.

A large gathering was present at the tournament representi­ng all seven participat­ing schools and the standard and skills of the players were a feat to watch. The tournament was organised by a committee headed by Vidura Principal D. G. Sumanaseka­ra, MD Indu Sumanaseka­ra, Manager of Sports Upali de Silva, Sports Coordinato­r Sharmain Karunaratn­e, Basketball MIC Hansa Wijeratne, Manager of Allied Services Kithsiri Silva and Manager of ICT Dilanjan Perera.
