Gateway celebrates achievements in sports

-

The Annual Colours Nite of Gateway Schools was held on July 11 and 12 at the Gateway College Auditorium in Kandy, under the distinguished patronage of Nimal Lewke, Chairman of the National Sports Council as Chief Guest.

Sportsmen and sportswomen from the Gateway schools at Rajagiriya, Kandy, Negombo and Dehiwela were recognised and rewarded for their outstanding achievements. Nearly 200 students who had represented the schools in no less than 15 different sports received awards of Merit, Colours and Special Awards. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the prestigious ‘Gateway Dove’ to Nichula Liyanage and Pasan Liyanage for Basketball and Hiruni de Zoysa for swimming. These three athletes were selected for the national Team, represented Sri Lanka and brought credit to the country as well.

Nimal Lewke speaking on the occasion emphasised the fact that mere practice does not make things perfect but perfect practice makes things perfect. He also encouraged students to be dedicated to their sports and be focused in planning for higher education and future career ambitions.

The programme for the evening was executed to precision by Gateway College, Kandy, which included breath taking dance items and heart stopping choral performances. The school did not forget to recognise the hard work of the coaches and trainers by felicitating them for their efforts as well.

It was a colourful evening befitting a Colors Nite of a group of schools which has now made giant strides in Sri Lanka’s sporting arena.
