What can a Sri Lankan cricketer do?

-

I read the letter Cricket or is it, in the Sunday Times on 19th July 2015 and I wonder whether the writer has only played Club Cricket or School Cricket or just a Cricket enthusiast. In order to comment on the performance of the present National Cricketrs, one has to play Cricket at National Level and experience the practical side as a player.

I am able to comment since I represented Sri Lanka in Cricket, National Selector for Two Years when Gamini Dissanayake was Presi- dent, Deputy Skipper to C.I. Gunasekera. I skippered S.S.C., C.C.C and Combined Colleges Team and Cricket Coach when Ceylon Toured South India to play the Gopalan Trophy encounter.

I do not agree that players in the National Team can be asked to get out for in order to play for Sri Lanka, the player achieves it through hard work. It is not for any of us to say which player should come in and which player should go out from the players who are playing. This job has to be done by the National Selectors.

When fielding two fielders bumping against each other hap- pens in Cricket not only in Sri Lanka but all other International Teams. You cannot say just because a bowler is hit for Fours or Sixes his bowling is weak for all bowlers go for the Match because the bowlers have been well trained and it is for the bowler to do it skillfully. Bowlers cannot be thrown out like dirt. All Selectors whether in School, Club or National Level selects the best Team to win matches? It is easy to criticize but who ever criticizes must show and act and experience the game practically. Lasantha Rodrigo
