Institute of Sports Science gathers momentum
The Institute of Sports Science inaugurated by the Sports Ministry of the Western Provincial Council is doing an enormous service to sportsmen and women of the Western Province by helping them in the improvement of sports disciplines in which they take part.
The main objective of the Institute is to provide free knowledge, advice and training on sports and physical fitness to the sportsmen and women, school children, school leavers, members of sports and youth clubs and other organisations connected to sports in the Western Province who show their skills in sports.
Over a decade the Institute of Sports Science had conducted a large number of training courses and programmes for the development of sports.
During the year 2015 up to now certificate courses were conducted and completed on aerobic, swimming, volleyball, athletics, netball and badminton. Further in order to uplift the health conditions of the people of Western Province, the institute had also taken measures to set up open aerobic centers at various places.
Certificate courses in badminton and netball were the latest training courses conducted by the institute. Badminton certificate courses were conducted continuously for one week from July 23 to 29. The courses were conducted at the Sports Institute and Badminton Stadium at Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya, providing practical as well as theoretical knowledge where nineteen course recipients participated.
Mahesha Ekanayake, a certified coach of the World Badminton Association was the Head Coach of the Badminton Certified Courses which provided knowledge of sports, medical science, general training theories, training and development of physical strength and sports nutrition.
Written and practical tests were also conducted at the end of the course.
