Suspended GCE A/L Examination Supervisor seeks redress from HRC

-

The Supervisor at Al Mannar Central College, Kalmunai who was penalised for the possession of a mobile phone by a candidate in the Exam Hall, has sought redress from the Human Rights Commission.

Principal of Mahmmood College Kalmunai, Liyakath Ali said she has been unfairly found fault with by the Examination Dept for the fault of the invigilator. She said she had duly passed on instructions to the invigilator to check all students, and although the invigilator had been slack in his duty, she had been penalised. Ms Ali further said that she had not been questioned or afforded an opportunity to explain the incident, but immediately suspended from the post of supervisor. It is learnt that the assistant supervisor has been promoted to her post by a mere journal entry, and directed to perform the duty of the supervisor. This is illegal and unjust,” she claimed.

Ms Ali said she is a principal of an important school and have been functioning as a supervisor for the last 15 years. She said the present invigilator is a Class II Grade 1 teacher without experience as a supervisor.

Meanwhile, Exams Commissioner, W.M.N.J Pushpakumara confirmed the supervisor had been interdicted. “We have suspended her as decided by the team which investigated,” he said.

Meanwhile, Eastern Province Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service, (SLEAS), Convenor, M.L.M. Mukthar said the episode had been dealt, inappropriately. He said the proper procedure was for the Zonal Director to hold an inquiry, following which, any suspensions or appointments are made. “This has to be later communicated to the Education Commissioner,” he explained.

“In this case, the Education Commissioner has been directly involved in the suspension, which is very surprising,” he added.
