All-Girl Band of IIT Campus takes Mashup Music to New Levels

-

The Informatics Institute of Technology ( IIT Campus) is renowned as a pioneer and leader in the private higher education sector since 1990. During the years of excellence IIT Campus has maintained a rich academic tradition mixed with a vibrant student life.

Along with the academic work, IIT Campus also emphasises on the need for students to take part in extracurricular activities. Each year the campus organises the annual event – Stagecraft, which gives an opportunity for students to display their talents in a night filled with song, dance and drama. Stagecraft which has played a significant role in the campus life of IIT has given birth to many talented artist who are now making strides in Sri Lanka’s entertainment sphere.

Clairvoyant, which is an all-girl trio consisting of IIT Campus students is one such talented group that has taken the centre stage during recent times. This all-girl band consists of Lozaine Pereira ( 22), Genevieve de Silva (22) and Tharani Welihinda (20). All three girls from Clairvoyant are following the BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management internal degree programmes from the University of Westminster offered at the IIT Campus.

“Tharani and I are cousins. So we have known each other our entire lives. Genevieve and I have been best friends for over 7 years. The three of us joined IIT which is where we all met Nishel the fourth member of our band at the time that unfortunately had to leave Clairvoyant as she migrated abroad. The four of us grew close and things pretty much spiraled from there onwards. I had an idea for a mashup for Stagecraft 2014 and I knew the four of us could pull it off if we gave it a try. It was a mutual agreement and we got together and worked hard on it and in the end the results were great,” Lozaine said.

Lozaine also said that their journey has been amazing and memorable. She said that like any family, Clairvoyant had its ups and downs during its inception and this built a strong bond amongst the girls.

“We all have completely different tastes in music and that allows us to come up with unconventional choices and arrangements. We mix in a bit of everything into our numbers like alternative rock, indie, pop, hip hop, acoustic, even techno and RnB; you name it. We take the different styles, mash them up and put our own little funky acoustic twist on it,” Lozaine said.

Following their maiden perfor- mance at Stagecraft 2014, Clairvoyant has gone on to perform at many major events such as at the Chokolaate Mother Daughter Fashion Designer Contest 2014 and eventually becoming a regular performer at gigs such as RnR Unplugged and Classic Rock Night at Manchester.

Speaking about their entry into IIT, Tharani said that the balance between the academic and the extracurricular activities brought out the best of all the students making it an enjoyable higher education institution. “Events such as Stagecraft and Cutting Edge exhibition, which really piqued our interests was another added factor for us to join IIT. In addition to that, my brother was a pupil around the time we decided to join. Having someone who knew the ropes at IIT was also another factor that influenced the three of us to join,” Tharani said.

“Our experience at IIT has been one of a kind. We’ve had so many amazing memories at IIT that has changed us as people and helped us to grow and mold us into who we want to be. The three of us took part in pretty much everything from the start and there are certainly no regrets. Studying at IIT gave us the opportunity to expose ourselves and learn more about ourselves and what we could do. We had so many experiences that pushed us to take risks and think outside the box. There really is nothing to compare it to,” Lozaine elaborating on the student life of IIT Campus said.

“We all will also be engaging in our last year at IIT as seniors and hoping to give our best and give our 100% talent and hard work into everything we do. Individually we will be choosing our own paths of work in the corporate world, but as a band we are hoping to expand more and continue our own journey as Clairvoyant,” Genevieve said.

IIT Campus is an award winning higher education institution which has produced over 3,000 graduates that are innovators, entrepreneurs and business leaders today. For further information, do write to “admissions@iit. ac.lk” or make a call on the hotline 0722 72 72 72.
