The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) founded in 1972 as the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon founded in 1941 and presently has a membership of over a thousand professionally qualified chemists. The IChemC, accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) United Kingdom (UK), is currently accepting applications from prospective students for its 38th intake for the Graduateship program in Chemistry (GIC). GIC was initiated in 1979 and a four year degree program which is equivalent to a special degree in chemistry offered by any state university in Sri Lanka.

Professor M D P de Costa, Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences in a media release informed that the GIC program is offered as weekday and weekend programs. This internationally accredited program is the largest producer of professional graduate chemists in Sri Lanka and so far it has produced over 1000 graduate chemists who are proudly employed in different avenues in chemistry. Like the chemistry special degree holders from any state universities, the graduate chemists can proceed to post graduate studies to obtain M.Sc, M. Phil, or PhD at local universities as well as at foreign universities. Some of the graduate chemists who obtained a PhD in chemistry are currently employed by universities and industries in locally and globally as well as by the IChemC.

Students those who have or hope to obtain three A/L science subjects passes irrespective of the number of sittings with chemistry as a subject are invited to apply for this program and enjoy the benefits of early bird rates. The course will be officially commenced in January 2016 and those who complete the program will graduate in October 2019. Those who already passed A/L should not need to waste their time, money, energy as well the precious youth by repeating A/L examinations since there is a golden opportunity to follow a productive and a renowned degree program in chemistry. Further, the students who perform well in the first and second year examinations may obtain a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Applied Chemistry from the Northumbria University UK with one more year of study in the UK or a BS degree from the University of Cincinnati, USA with two more years of study in the USA.

The cost of the entire program including a very well structured practical sessions along with number of electives to satisfy the student interests can be little more than Rs 11000 per month over a period of four years.
