ANC shapes the lives of individuals
Aravinth Pushparaj, an undergraduate engineering student under the ANC US/ Canada University Transfer Programme maintained an outstanding 4.0GPA during his time at ANC and was awarded the High Achiever Award and the Best Transfer Student Award at the ANC Graduation ceremony held in Colombo recently. Upon successful completion of his first year at ANC, Aravinth has now been transferred to York University, Canada to complete his undergraduate degree in engineering.
Aravinth has always been a person who wanted to keep his options open. He completed his Edexcel London A/ Levels in Belvoir College Internationalwith an open option of both biology and mathematics as his subject combination – so that he would have a wide selection of subjects when pursuing his university education. As a school student, he had been a scout and shown leadership qualities and great many soft skills with determination and drive towards success. Aravinth was also the Head Prefect of the Belvoir College International in his senior year which indeed added to his personal growthand development of his character and better judgement in heading in the right direction. At ANC, he was part of the Rotaract Club and the ANC Charity Club – however he thinks that he could not use his full potential in terms of his involvement in the ANC student body activities as one year at ANC passed in a breeze.
Soon after A/Levels, he was not sure as to whether he should pursue his university education in medicine or engineering. Initially, he had plans to apply for his tertiary education in India as his grandparents are originally from India. However, his mother had come across the degree pathways offered by ANC and was quite convinced that ANC would be a better option for Aravinth. After looking at the subjects and a briefing session with the ANC student counsellors, Aravinth decided to enrol in the engineering degree programme offered at the ANC – yet he kept his options open to decide later as to whether he should complete the degree in Sri Lanka or transfer to USA or Canada to complete his degree.
Aravinth Pushparaj - speaking of his experience at ANC:
“Even as a school student, I went to many seminars in search of better higher education options. When my mom brought ANC to my notice,I found the options at ANC pretty good. After considering many degree options, I decided to do a major in Electrical Engineering. At first, I was not planning on going abroad right after my A/Levels. I am the only child and my parents were also reluctant to send me overseas immediately after my A/Levels. I too needed a little more time to think over as to whether I have made the right choice regarding the country and the major. ANCUniversity Transfer Program gave me that space I needed to think. I had the option of doing the first year of my degree program in Sri Lanka which gave me enough time to work things out and to see what lies aheadof me.
ANC has pretty strong faculty comprised of well qualified lecturers with a sound knowledge in their field - when it came to my subjects I was comfortable with all the lecturers. ANC Degree Pathway also gave me enough flexibility to choose the subjects that interested me during the first year of the degree. In terms of flexibility and education options, I think US education system and Canada education system are pretty much alike.
Under the ANC transfer program, initially I thought of transferring to the USA but then I applied to both American and Canadian universities. I received offers from both destinations. I chose Canada primarily because of family. Besides, York University Canada is a well reputed university which has good finance options. Their course fees and other charges are very reasonable and comparatively cheaper. Also I will be able to choose between the bustling city life and quite country life and there are a great deal of things to do in Canada. I am confident that I have made a very good choice.
The major in electrical engineering gives me a wide area of selection in terms ofa career. I need to explore more options and work through the next couple of years to take the direction that gives me the maximum advantage of the degree I earn. Once I complete my degree in Canada, I expect to obtain some experience working in Canada – if I return without experience, theory alone will not help me build my CV. Employability is often determined by the kind of experience one has received. In fact, Canada is a good place to work to get the experience in preparation to face the job market anywhere in the world.” For more information on ANC Education contact
