Colombo resident apologises to Rotary Internatio­nal President, pays Rs. 10,000 to charity

AColombo resident, Amrit Muttukumar­u who was brought to court on contempt charges, on Friday, tendered an apology to Rotary Internatio­nal President, Sri Lanka- born K. R. Ravindran, and agreed to pay Rs 10,000 to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society, in settlement of the case.

By a previous decree of Colombo Additional District Judge, Mr Muttukumar­u had undertaken not to make any written statement on any matter regarding Mr Ravindran, first Sri Lankan to be elected Rotary Internatio­nal President, in a defamation action filed against Mr. Muttukumar­u.

Mr. Muttukumar­u of Rosmead Place, Colombo 7, also promised never to address any communicat­ion whatsoever concerning Mr Ravindran, by letters, emails or any other writing to anyone in Sri Lanka or overseas.

By a previous decree of Colombo Additional District Judge, Mr Muttukumar­u had undertaken not to make any written statement on any matter regarding Mr Ravindran, first Sri Lankan to be elected Rotary Internatio­nal President, in a defamation action filed against Mr. Muttukumar­u. Following the undertakin­g given by Mr Muttukumar­u, contempt charges were filed for violating that undertakin­g. Mr Muttuku- maru denied having acted in contempt of court but apologised for any pain of mind or inconvenie­nce caused to Mr Ravindran.

He also agreed to pay Rs 10,000 to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society, a charity nominated by the President of Rotary Internatio­nal, in settlement of the case. Contempt proceeding­s were accordingl­y terminated.

Mr Romesh de Silva P. C. with Mr Sugath Caldera, instructed by D. L. & F. De Saram, Attorneys- at- Law, appeared for the Plaintiff K. R. Ravindran. Mr. Suren Fernando instructed by Abdeen Associates, Attorneysa­t- Law, appeared for Mr. Anton Muttukumar­u.
