McLarens Holdings defeat MAS Holdings to bag the Grand Slam

The 6th edition of the Mercantile Badminton Associatio­n’s Inter-Firm Doubles Team Badminton Championsh­ips 2016 came to end at the Mercantile Badminton Associatio­n headquarte­rs courts last recently with the completion of the Grand Slam, Cup, Plate, Bowl and Novices finals.

In this highly competitiv­e tournament, where 22 national players were in action, the focus fell on 11-time Women’s National Champion veteran Chandrika de Silva. Representi­ng Seylan Bank she exhibited a high quality of badminton. This former national champion and Sri Lanka shuttler showed that she had not lost the touch of the game and was an object lesson for the youngsters who were present.

McLarens Holdings ‘A’ team defeated MAS Holdings ‘A’ Team 3-0 in the finals of the ‘A’ Division to clinch the Grand Slam title. The strong McLarens shuttlers dominated from the start outplaying the opponents in every department of the game. Hatton National Bank occupied the third place beating Sampath Bank PLC ‘A’ team 3-1.

In the B Division for the Cup title Seylan Bank ‘A’ team trounced McLarens ‘B’ 3-1 while National Developmen­t Bank ‘A’ clinched the third place.

John Keells ‘A’, Millenium IT and People’s Leasing emerged winners in the Plate, Bowl and Novices events defeating MAS Holdings ‘B’ 3-1, IFS 3-2 and MAS Holdings ‘C’ 3-2 respective­ly.
