Defending champions Schools U-19 dethroned

The Mercantile Cricket Sixes 2016 entered its final rounds stage yesterday with 63 teams consisting 85 matches playing in two tiers in six venues.

The tournament was conducted in Tier 'A' (turf matches) and Tier 'B' (Matting matches) segments with Segment 'A' consisting of 18 teams.

With the completion of the first day's play yesterday, the six top teams of Tier 'A' will advance to the final round played in two groups with three teams in each group the two leaders will meet in the finals at the MCA Grounds today.

Last year's winner, the Sri Lanka Schools Under-19 and runner-up HNB failed to find their places in the final round at this year's edition.

Fourteen teams qualified for the pre-quarter final stage with last year's champion MAS Silueta 'B' and runner-up Stafford Motors are drawn byes and will go straight to the quarter-finals.

Tier 'A' final round matches will take place today only at MCA and Tier 'B' matches will take place at Thurstan College and Wesley College grounds from 9.00 am onwards. Both finals will be played at the MCA Grounds. Teams entered the final rounds: Tier 'A': Mobitel, MAS Silueta 'A', LB Finance, MAS Unichela 'B', MAS Active 'A', Nations Trust Bank

Finance 'A', Janashakth­i Insurance, Citizens Developmen­t Business, Cargills Bank 'B', Heshan Flex 'A', Kanrich Finance 'A', Stafford Motors 'A', MAS Silueta 'B', Amana Takaful Insurance, Nations Trust Bank 'B' and A. Baur & Co.
