Doctor of Business Administration at the University of Kelaniya

-

The Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies (FCMS), University of Kelaniya, has introduced the first ever DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) programme of National University level.

The launch will take place at a ceremony at the University premises on Friday, with Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor, Prof Sunanda Madduma Bandara as the Chief Guest, and other distinguished guests in attendance.

“From the start, the new programme we initiated was indeed a tedious task for over two-and-a-half years to gain its approval, which we finally saw through," says Kelaniya University's Dean of the FCMS, Dr D.M. Semasinghe.

"DBA is a ‘professional Doctorate’ focusing on Business Practice with deep understanding of related theoretical underpinnings. Thereby aiming at those already successful in Business and with an envision towards new intellectual challenges."

"Hence, this programme is designed to equip professionals with practical and specialised knowledge which is critical towards making high level businesses, as well as in terms of enhancing the knowledge frontier," he further stated.

“There are PhD Courses at present, which prioritise on theoretical knowledge alone, which is not entirely what is demanded by the Commerce field. The Commerce field does not rely solely upon theoretical aspects, whereas more practical involvement is also necessary. Hence, it is a revolutionary step we have initiated upon in this regard. Introducing this programme to a Sri Lankan University for the first time, it paves the way towards fulfilling the current demand of the corporate sector in our country," Prof Madduma Bandara stated.

Senior Lecturer- Dept of Marketing Management, Dr Sudath Weerasiri said, “DBA has the same status and challenges as a PhD. In contrast, a PhD requires students to make a significant contribution to knowledge and theory. Thereby requiring the student to apply and develop existing theories and knowledge in making a significant contribution towards professional practice in his/her area of business. While a DBA is considered a professional Doctorate with a focus on theoretical knowledge but, more of a use in Business practice aimed at professionals in the Business sector.”

“The DBA qualification offered by the University of Kelaniya is at Level 12 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) which is the highest qualification level specified by the University Grants Commission. This will make it equivalent in status to a PhD. Hence, Business sector individuals will definitely benefit from this," Dr Weerasiri further stated.

“In addition to obtaining a qualification where the professionals are able to prefix ‘Dr.’ to their name, this programme also allows top managers to deepen their expertise. It also contributes towards the knowledge of their respective profession, while preparing them for the complex analysis and decision-making required at senior management level. It will also enhance pro- fessional capability and credibility, develop networks as well as provide a firm foundation for further career development or for a major career move. Employers will benefit by supporting their staff for the DBA, to attract, develop and retain key talent, together with building knowledge for a competitive advantage," Dr Semasinghe further enlightened.

“Our Faculty genesis goes as far back as 1976 and hence, we are capable of conducting and delivering a quality programme without any barriers by way of resources or Faculty and University experience gathered over the years," Dr Semasinghe further added.

DBA is a 3-year study programme with integrated coursework and research components. Thereby, candidates are expected to complete the coursework within the first year, after which, it will be elevated towards Research work followed by a viva voice examination.

This programme is designed to encourage development of Doctorallevel thinking and research skills across key contemporary management areas, through its distinctive teaching, learning and assessment methodologies.

Kelaniya University's FCMS is one of the finest and fastest growing Faculties in the country, in terms of quality of graduate output. Thereby committed in achieving excellence by providing learners with opportunities towards knowledge development, skills and attitudes to serve the nation.
