‘Royal Scrabbler 2016’ a resounding success
‘Royal Scrabbler 2016’, an Inter-School Scrabble Championship organized by the Royal College Scrabble Club, was successfully concluded on July 9 at the College Main Hall.
The Royal College Scrabble Club, since its inception in 1994, has organised many projects to create a society fluent in English and with excellent Scrabble skills. The ‘Royal Scrabbler’ Inter-school tournament, an annual fixture in the Club’s agenda since the late 90’s, as well as one of the most noteworthy inter- school Scrabble tournaments in the island, was the platform where many talented individuals matching the international scale were first found.
This year’s tournament saw the participation of a significant number of schools islandwide- leading Colombo schools such as Musaeus College and Bishops College, as well as schools from other provinces, such as Richmond College, Galle and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala. The tournament was conducted in both U-15 & U- 19 age groups, affording emerging Scrabble players of the country an opportunity to display their knowledge and skill.
After 6 rounds of tough competition and an intense battle of words between schools, Royal College won both Divisions, while Lyceum International School Wattala, Hejaaz International School and Richmond College Galle, Hindu College Colombo were the Runners- up and 2nd Runners- up in U- 15 and U- 19 Divisions respectively.
Tournament Adjudicator Shamil Akbar, Scoring and Data Entry officials Jayendra de Silva and Raditha Dissanayake ensured a smooth run and fair play of the tournament throughout the day.
The Prize- Awarding Ceremony was graced by Royal College Principal, B.A. Abeyrathne, Teacher-in-Charge of Royal College Scrabble Club, Mrs Inosha De Silva and past and present officials of the Club.
