Touch of French cinema

-

French drama ‘Tomboy’, a story that explores a theme of ambiguous gender will be screened at 3 pm on August 2 and at 6.30 pm on August 3 at Alliance Française de Colombo, 11, Barnes Place, Colombo 7.

Written and directed by Céline Sciamma said, the drama revolves around a family which moves into a new neighbourhood, and a 10-year-old named Laure deliberately presents as a boy named Mikhael to the neighbourhood children. It is heavily implied that Mikhael is a closeted transgender boy. This film follows his experiences with his newfound friends, his potential love interest, Lisa, his younger sister and his parents. It focuses on the significance of gender identity in social interaction from an early age, the difficulties of being transgender and young, and how Mikhael navigates these in the background of childhood play and love.

French comedy film ‘Le Prénom’ (What’s in a Name?) directed by A. De La Patellière and M. Delaporte tells about Vincent who is about to become a father. At a meeting with childhood friends he announces the name for his future son. The scandalous name ignites a discussion which surfaces unpleasant matters from the past of the group.

Released in 2012, this box office hit movie was adapted from the play Le Prénom by the same authors. The FrenchBelgian comedy film had five nominations at the 38th César Awards, winning in the categories Best Supporting Actress (Valérie Benguigui) and Best Supporting Actor (Guillaume de Tonquédec).

The movie has won two awards at film festivals in Canada: the Grand Prix HydroQuébec at the Festival du cinéma international en AbitibiTémiscamingue,[5] and the Radio Canada Audience Award at the Cinéfranco International Francophone Film Festival in Toronto.

The film will be screened at 3 pm on August 9 and at 6.30 pm on August 10.
