Teledrma ‘Sonduru Dadayakkar­aya’ Collapse of a clan

Thusitha de Silva’s newest teleserial ‘Sonduru Dadayakkar­aya’ a story with a novel theme highlighti­ng the downfall of feudal system and the challenges face by them, is now being telecast every Sunday at 8.30 pm on ITN channel.

Starring a collection of veteran and young talented actors and actresses, the cast include Janaka Kumbukge, Nita Fernando, Amila Abeysekara, Pubudu Chathurang­a, Buddadasa Vithanarac­hchi, Chamila Peiris, Wasanthi Chathurani and Anujula Rajapaksa. The story revolves around three unmarried sisters who are living in a dilapidate­d walawwa and social and economical problems there are facing. The two aging sisters (played by Nita

Fernando and Wasanthi Chathurani) are desperate about not being able to enter into the wedlock while the youngest is dreaming about a fantasy world is waiting for her prince charming. Living in her 50s, the eldest sister is still go after marriage proposals. The youngest (played by Anjula Rajapaksa) wants to be fashionabl­e and she end up becoming a shoplifter.

One day she is caught and the shop owner, (played by Pubudu) uses her to achieve his ulterior motives. In the meantime she find another man, a fisherman.

There is one thing in common for all three sisters; they are yearning for protection.

The teleplay is woven around a universal theme of the down of traditiona­l rich and dilemma they faced with inability to adhere the social changes. Thusitha, director has chosen Morakele Walawwa a dilapidate­d

ancestral mansion that is on the verge of collapse as the main location.

“There was no one living in this massive building, a proof itself that there was a generation of people lived in this country,” Thusitha entered the world of art by directing a teledrama in 1990. His maiden was an experiment using 3D (three dimensiona­l) technology. It was his second and third teledramas ‘Uththamavi’ and ‘Punchirala’ that brought him to limelight as teledrama maker. This was followed by directing short films and also gave him an opportunit­y to join filmmaker Pathiraja L. S. Dayananda to assist in his movies.

A student of Ananda College, Maradana Thusitha did his studies in the science stream. At the end of his Advanced Level in 1979 he produced his maiden direction a stage play titled “Para Wasa Etha” and this brought him to the limelight in the school circle.
