Jeevan heroics help TU to outright win

Forgotten Lankan allrounder Jeevan Mendis now turning out for the Tamil Union came with a superb double to guide them to a huge win against Chilaw Marians on the final day of the Premier Tier ‘A’ cricket encounter played at the FTZ ground in Katunayake. Thus it became TUs first outright win for the season.

Tamil Union having taken first lease of the wicket on day one amassed a score of 450 which came on the back of tons made by Jeevan Mendis and Tharanga Paranavith­ana supported by Manoj Sarathchan­dra.

Then Mendis shone with the ball to finish with impressive match figures of 8 for 134.

NCC having dominated proceeding­s against rivals and neighborin­g club SSC had to be satisfied with a first inning win in the match concluded at the SSC ground yesterday.

The third day’s play saw NCC resuming their second innings from their overnight score of 27 for no loss going in for quick runs made a score of 232 for 4 declared.

NCC’s innings featured two valuable partnershi­ps with openers Niroshan Dickwella who made a 79 and Sandun Weerakkody giving them a flying start of 93 runs and then Chathurang­a de Silva and Angelo Perera associatin­g in an unbroken stand of 87 runs for the fifth wicket.

SSC set a massive target of 407 runs for victory ended the day on 172 for 4.

Moors SC came out on top against Army SC as they recorded a first inning win in the match which ended at the BRC ground.

Moors SC having made a formidable score of 376 in the first innings bowled out their opponents for 242 and then batting the second time Moors SC made 219 for 8 declared.

The highlight of the match was a career best knock of 181 coming from Shanuka Dulaj whose 222 ball knock included 20 boundaries and five sixes.

CCC too registered a first inning win over Colts CC in the match concluded at the Colts ground.

An unbeaten 116 in 118 balls with 13 boundaries and three sixes and half tons by skipper Ashan Priyanjan, Lahiru Madusanka and Ron Chandragup­ta saw CCC make a score of 384 runs in reply to Colts CC’s score of 276. Colts CC batting the second time ended on 316 for 6.
