Life in Australia

-

Life in Australia is bound to be fun. Away from families and in an unknown destination, students will face a surplus of opportunities and challenges. The first concern that most have, is the cost of living. The typical Sri Lankan students are often pampered at home and sheltered from real life needs of budgeting, money management and even grocery shopping!

While the Tuition fee in Australia is considerably lower than in Europe or America, going to university can mean more costs than just tuition fees. Accommodation, books, study materials, transport and parking are all common expenses often overlooked.

Travel

Owning a car can incur many costs such as fuel and parking charges. However, Public transportation has none of these hindrances. The country is equipped with an extensive and growing bus and rail network, offering congestion-free, fast and reliable services to and from campus. With concession fares available for fulltime students, it’s a reliable and smart way to be cost efficient.

Books and Equipment Costs

The university will often provide a list of books and text books that are required for each course. While books are often very costly, with a little care, costs can be minimized. The university library is equipped with a host of books in every subject and is available for reference. Thereby the student can rely on this rather than always purchase books.

Furthermore, second hand books and equipment are often available too. Advertisements on university notice boards or social media will inform you of what is available and where.

Food and Groceries

It is extremely tempting to try out all the unknown food items that are seen. This can be done on budget with careful consideration.

The first tip is to learn to cook. Before heading out to Australia, learn to cook some basic meals so that you can feed yourself !

At the supermarket, buy generic or home brand products. Look for the nearest low-cost supermarket and shop there. Shop only once a week: the less you shop, the more you save. Take advantage of specials and discounts. Cook large portions and keep leftovers for lunch or dinner for the next day. Bring lunch from home, rather than buying food. Avoid shopping at corner stores, petrol stations and other convenience store locations.

If the urge to eat out hits you (as is bound to happen!) find out where the locals eat and check out those restaurants. They will be most likely cheaper and serve more authentic food.

Swinburne University of Technology

Constantly ranked amongst the top 3% of universities, Swinburne offers a variety of subjects for the international student.

Located in the convenience of Hawthorne, Melbourne, the university is in close proximity to the city and its life. Students will be able to balance their studies, their studies with the multi-cultural experience that the country has to offer.

International Leader in Education and Local Giant

The Swinburne University of Technology has partnered with the Nawaloka College of Higher Studies, which is part of the renowned Nawaloka group to offer students the best educational experience.

Nawaloka which is synonymous with quality ensures that students can start their Swinburne degree from the comfort of Sri Lanka while being globally competitive. NCHS offers the same syllabus with the same quality that is available in the Melbourne campus.

Having commenced the degree in Sri Lanka, the students can then select the option of completing their education in the Swinburne campuses in Melbourne, Australia, or closer to home, in Malaysia.
