Integrated learning on an international stage
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is equipping its students with the professional knowledge, realworld experience and international perspectives they need to strengthen their prospects for the future.
Graduates today face an increasingly competitive job market. Candidates are expected to have initiative, ideas, drive and above all, experience. With shifting trends in workplaces, business culture and a rapidly rising entrepreneurial spirit among new graduates, it’s important that students have an opportunity to form a foundation of real-world experience during their studies, so that they may innovate into the future.
PolyU has earned its reputation as a progressive, forwardthinking university, committed to preparing its students for all this and more. Specially designed courses include internships, work placements and applied research projects which provide students with the skills and experience they need in order to respond, adapt and identify applications for their knowledge in the real world.
Learning by ‘doing’ has long been heralded as a secret to success. Strong partnerships in different industries both internationally and in Hong Kong, offer PolyU students the opportunity to complement their academic success with internships and work placements through WorkIntegrated Education (WIE) and to be part of applied research and development projects. WIE is a curriculum requirement that gives students valuable working experience in their chosen field either in Hong Kong or abroad. Companies like Alibaba, The Economic Observer, and Langham Hotel are just few of the companies which participate in WIE program.
Global opportunities for professional development
Connecting its students to the world at large is one of PolyU’s leading philosophies. Cooperation with top-universities such as MIT has enabled PolyU students to work in collaboration on research projects as part of their exchange programme. PolyU’s students active participation at global competitions and workshops benefit them as they meet with academic leaders, business mentors and join the international dialogues, debates and discussions in their chosen field.
Whether embarking on a semester exchange or taking on new responsibilities on campus, PolyU students embrace every challenge with enthusiasm.
Poonnapa ZHENG is originally from Thailand and is studying Chemical Technology, “Through my department, I was able to join a summer exchange in China on ‘Green Chemistry and Chemical Technology’ and also work as a student helper in my professor’s laboratory. Exchange period really expanded my understanding of my chosen field, and working in a laboratory was the perfect way to get guidance from the leading scientists, be involved in laboratory experiments and use the latest hightech laboratory equipment,” says Poonnapa, “I feel like I have a real advantage for the future of my career.”
Becoming exceptional citizens
Edouard LEVEILLE NIZEROLLE LE GOUEY, an electronic & Information Engineering student from France, finds himself as an exceptional citizen, “Having lived abroad for most of my childhood without setting foot in Asia, Hong Kong was the first city to hit my eyes. Hong Kong is probably Asia’s most cosmopolitan city, yet many things are still very traditional, which makes a very interesting mix that I continue to discover every day. Naturally, PolyU provides lots of support to help students adapt to local life. PolyU makes everything easy - which pushes the students to see beyond their abilities. “
PolyU students support their professional knowledge and skills with community engagement, civic responsibilities and a belief in social justice. Not only are students gaining the momentum and passion they need to truly succeed, but they’re also looking at the world and thinking how they can make it better. With the support of PolyU, students are successfully developing initiatives to find solutions that are helping to change the world.
