Ushan Guneratne of Lyceum Ratnapura, an outstanding sportsman and student
Versatile swimmer, Ushan Avishka Gunaratne of Lyceum International School Ratnapura won the Silver medal in the 200metre Medley Relay and Bronze medals in the 100-metre Butterfly Stroke and 50-metre Butterfly Stroke events at the South Asian Aquatic Championship Meet 2016, held recently at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex in Colombo.
Ushan had previously represented Sri Lanka at the 5th Asian Schools Swimming Championship - 2016 in Indonesia and the 8th Asian Age Group Championship 2016 and came within the best eight in Indonesia.
In 2016, he reached a national record in the 100-metre Butterfly Stroke event clocking 59.79 sec- onds at Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Aquatic Championship. He has been placed first in 100metre and 50-metre Butterfly Stroke events at many provincial meets since 2012. He also established two records in 100metre and 50-metre Butterfly Stroke events at the International Schools Aquatic Championship of The International Schools of Sri Lanka group.
In addition to swimming, he has performed well in several other school activities. He is a black belt holder in Karate and has represented Sri Lanka in Japan in 2008 and in Malaysia at the World Itosukai Karate Championship in 2009. Subsequently, he bagged a number of victories in Kumite and Kata events in Sri Lanka.
An outstanding Kandyan danc- er, endowed with grace and gusto, Ushan represented Lyceum Ratnapura at All-Island School Dancing Festivals during several years and brought honour to the school as an artist, along with his team members.
Moreover, as a committed athlete of the school team, Ushan represented Lyceum Ratnapura at Sabaragamuva Provincial Athletic Meets during several years and the International School Athletic Championship (ISAC) Meet in 2013 and 2015. Performing well in these meets, especially in throwing events, he brought credit to his school. Additionally, as the Games Captain of Lyceum Ratnapura, he effectively discharged his duties in the last couple of years. Having joined Lyceum Ratnapura in January 2005, Ushan is currently preparing for Cambridge A/L in Science in 2017.
