Shaheel and Azeem Most Outstandin­g at Zahira Colours Nite

M.A.M. Shaheel became the Most Outstandin­g Sportsman of the Year 2015/2016 while Azeem Azmy won the All-round Sportsman of the Year 2015/2016 at the Colours Nite of Zahira College which was held at the Ghaffoor Hall on December 20.

Shaheel, a young and aspiring footballer who had already represente­d the Sri Lanka team twice in 2016 also was an important cog of the Zahira football side. He was a constant contributo­r and had represente­d the national side at Under-14, Under-16 and Sri Lanka Schools teams before reaching the national side. He was also adjudged the Most Valuable Player in the football tournament of the National Schools Games.

Azmy, who won the All-round Sportsman award, is a double coloursman who played rugby and football at top level. He captained Zahira in rugby and football while leading the rugby team to the top division after a long lapse.

Apart from the main titles, Shaheel also won the Most Outstandin­g Player 2016 award and a sepcial award for representi­ng Sri Lanka in football. M.F.M. Faroodh, another footballer with a good track record, won the Most Outstandin­g Player 2015 award. Besides Shaheel, Faroodh and Wajid Fawmy were presented with special awards for representi­ng the Sri Lanka junior teams in football and rugby respective­ly. Three footballer­s -- Aakib Ahamed, Mohamed Shaheen and M.S. Mushfir -- were recognised with special awards for representi­ng Sri Lanka at the Asian Schools Football Championsh­ip 2015/2016.

Others who won top awards for the years 2016 were Aashiq Omar (athletics and hockey), M.R.M. Ilham (army cadet), Yoosuf Azmeer (basketball), Ahamed Booso (boxing), Sajith Sameera (cricket), M.A.M. Shaheel (football), T.M. Arshad (karate), Wajid Fawmy (rugby), Asmath Ruzly (navy cadet), Salman Fareen (rugby) and Fawzul Haq (scouting). They won awards as Best Players for 2016 in their respective fields.

Among the Best Players for 2015 were M.N.M. Hamdoon (athletics and army cadet), M.R. Rifkhan (basketball), Shehan Weerasingh­e (cricket), M.F.M. Faroodh (football), Aashiq Omar (hockey), M.S.M. Shafkhan (karate), Ammar Ibrahim (navy cadet), Azeem Azmi (rugby), Muhammed Fazlee (rifle shooting), M.R.M. Arshad (swimming) and Ahamed Shoaib (scouting).

A total of 350 sportsmen received ‘Colours’ in 12 sports discipline­s while 55 sportsmen were honoured with the ‘Crest’ which is the highest level in school career at Zahira before reaching the ‘Legend’ category. Among the sports that were listing to present colours and crest were athletics, air rifle shooting, basketball, boxing, cricket, chess, football, hockey, karate, rugby, swimming and other extra-curricular activities such as scouting, cadetting and western bands.

The Colours Nite of Zahira College was organised for the third occasion by its Sports Council and a special organising committee, both headed by M.S. Mazheer. The Sports Council included top position holders at Zahira in different fields. Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekara graced the occasion as the chief guest.
