RCOBANA launches 2nd ‘Win the World with English’ Programme

The Royal College Old Boys' Associatio­n of North America (RCOBANA) commenced their second ‘Win the World with English’ (WWWE) programme at Royal College with the start of 2017.

RCOBANA launched the programme initially when members visited their school and reported that many present day students could not converse in English. The programme was developed to improve spoken English skills. Most of the students participat­ing are Grade 6 scholarshi­p winners who had come to Royal College from different parts of the country.

A new batch of 38 Grade 8 students will be taught by the newly appointed English teachers from the Cosmopolit­an Training Centre, Priyanka Mendis andManu Mudalige.

Royal College was presented with the sponsorshi­p for the programme by RCOBANA to carry out the WWWE programme for the coming year.

Speeches were given by a few students from the first ‘World with English’ programme. Prof. Rupa Purasinghe, Coordinato­r, Win the World with English Programme for RCOBANA explained that the students’ progress as seen from the speeches was proof of the success of this programme.

Chief Guest, City Planning and Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem, said he too entered Royal College through a Navodaya scholarshi­p from Galagedara. He emphasised that a knowledge of spoken English can be acquired with a programme of this nature. Royal College Principal B. A, Abeyratne, RCOBANA Founding President Tissa Attapattu, RCOBANA Past Presidents Dr. Gamini Hethumuni and Dr. Sarath Gunatilake and RCOBANA Secretary, Chris Pushparaja­h as well as Royal College Union (RCU) Skills Centre Chairman Boshan Dayaratne and Secretary of RCU Athula Munasinghe were present at the event.

RCOBANA also evaluates the students’ progress through two independen­t evaluators, Managing Director of Research Consultanc­y Bureau (Pvt) Ltd., Ravi Bamunusing­he and Melanie Senanayake.
