MIT Cargo gains momentum with CSR in Giribawa

-

MIT Cargo ( Pvt.) Ltd. Continues to gain momentum through their driven attitude towards maintaining a leading stance in their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. They aim the work towards the less fortunate in the community and promoting a greener environment and this they value as something they hold very close to the heart. Thus, understanding the impact of involving initiatives that benefit society at large is essential.

Considering the harsh environment / weather and living conditions of the people in Giribawa, MIT Cargo joined hands with them in 2009 and pledged to assist the community and the environment through projects which are initiated annually. Giribawa is a village set in the outskirts of Kurunegala District.

For the past seven years, the town of Giribawa had experienced and cherished acts of kindness, care and concern from the CSR initiatives done through MIT Cargo. Many of these projects included schemes such as a unit for improving the English language, stationery items and shoes for students, computer units and a building for Training programmes for differently-abled children.

On 19th November 2016, the MIT Team proudly declared open a Laboratory for the students of Gampola Maha Vidyalaya, a much needed facility that was in deprivation. Going the extra mile to assist MIT Cargo on all projects and coordination is Niroshan Fernando, the programme coor- dinator at World Vision Lanka.

The Environment and the pollution caused by industrial activities is another area for concern. Considering the number of containers, volume (kgs) movement and with the assistance of the Central Environmental Authority a formula was derived to consider the number of plants that’s needed to be given back to the environment annually. 1595 plants have been planted in Giribawa over the years and it is comforting to know that MIT has in some measure helped to achieve steps towards a greener environment and preserving Mother Nature for future generations.

This year 520 plants were distributed amongst three schools in Giribawa and were planted by the students who are in complete charge of taking care of the plants. This gives young ones the opportunity to love and nurture the greenery, understand its importance and experience the joy in reaping its harvest and to preserve it in years to come. Constant monitoring is done by the team in order to ensure that the plants are being taken care of, and in response the schools and students keep us informed of the progress of plants.

MIT Cargo is proud to continue the work carried out in Giribawa and constantly grooms the younger generation at MIT to continue to serve the community with love and bearing in mind the famous words of Sir Winston Churchill: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
