Over 8000 of the world’s best and brightest students choose the University of Melbourne for an outstanding education in engineering and IT,and competitive edge in the job market. Ranked first in Australia and eighteenth in the world for engineering and technology*, the University of Melbourne providesa truly global experience for students, who have the opportunity to study with a diverse cohort representing 130 countries.

Taught by leading academics, the Master of Engineering offers graduates access to cutting-edgeindustry and research projects, and is the first engineering master’s program in Australia to have dual accreditation via the Washington Accord and European accrediting system, EUR-ACE®, enabling graduates to work in more countries around the world.

It was the University of Melbourne’s reputation and flexible curriculum that drew Viraj Abeykoon to make the move from Sri Lanka to study the Master of Engineering (Civil) abroad: “The rankings played a large role in my choice. The opportunity to study subjects in areas outside your major was also a key factor,” he said.

To become a professionally accredited engineer at the University of Melbourne, students complete an undergraduate degree with an engineering major, followed by the Master of Engineering. This unique model enriches the student experience by offering greater technical depth as well as the opportunity to develop the soft skills needed tosucceed in the workforce.

Viraj completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne before enrolling in the Master of Engineering (Civil):

“The idea of building structures and roads that could last for decades and having the opportunity to innovate, attracted me to civil engineering. I’ve really enjoyed learn- ing the processes that will enable me to create civil structures, and being able to develop skills in additional areas like business and management at the same time,” he said.

Viraj looks forward to a career as a civil engineer, and has managed to secure two internships in the course of his studies:

“My first internship was with the City of Melbourne and provided a great opportunity to gain experience in project management. I am currently on my second internship working for a civil engineering company that I got to know through my first internship”

For students considering the move to Australia, Viraj encourages networking and getting to know your peers:

“Embrace the opportunity to meet lots of other students and who you will likely be working with after graduation. While it may feel daunting to move to a country where you may not know many people, you soon realise that lots of other students are in the same situation as you and everyone is friendly.”

The Master of Engineering is offered in a range of technical specialisations, including: biomedical, chemical, biochemical, civil, structural, environmental, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, spatial, and software engineering, as well as engineering ‘with business’ specialisations.

A range of scholarships are available for engineering and IT students at undergraduate, graduate and PhD level, and are awarded on the basis of academic performance.
