IMU Malaysia Science Challenge 2017

Encourages High School Students to Kick start their Medical and Health Sciences Journey

Now in its third year of running, the Science Challenge is Malaysia’s Internatio­nal Medical University (IMU)’s effort to encourage students to demonstrat­e their science knowledge, understand­ing, and skills. While the Science Challenge is a competitio­n, it also develops valuable skills such as teamwork, creativity, persistenc­e, problem solving, and cooperatio­n.

In partnershi­p with Rainbow – Ryre, Sri Lanka, a subsidiary of Rainbow Institute of Communicat­ion and English, the competitio­n invited students from leading private, public, and internatio­nal schools to put their science knowledge and skills to the test. Apart from presenting invigorati­ng challenges to the participan­ts, the Science Challenge also provided participan­ts with practical and interactiv­e workshop making it a fun and educationa­l event.Between the stages of the challenge, students had lots of fun as they enhanced their knowledge through practical workshops on DNA Testing and Blood Extraction­s.

The event that took place at The Hilton Residencie­s Hotel was graced by dignitarie­s of the Internatio­nal Medical University, Malaysia. The team from IMU, included Professor Chin Bee Yoke - Associate Dean, School of Health Sciences, Dr. Ranjit De Alwis – Associate Professor at IMU whose origins are in Sri Lanka and the Internatio­nal Marketing team of the University. Dr. Mahim Mendis and Mr. Steve Santhosh, represente­d Rainbow - Ryre, Sri Lanka.

Ananda College emerged as the champion, while Gateway College, Colombo and Gateway College, Dehiwala came first and second runner-ups respective­ly. The champions were awarded opportunit­ies to study medicine at IMU, the challenge trophy, US$ 500, medals and branded Adidas bags while the first and second runner-ups were awarded trophies, medals, and cash awards of USD300 and USD200 respective­ly.

Being Malaysia’s first and most establishe­d private medical and health sciences university with over 25 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education with a Tier-5 rating in the SETARA ratings of Malaysian Universiti­es and University-Colleges awarded by Malaysian Qualificat­ions Agency (MQA), IMU have been committing to this effort over the years and have been enriching students learning by translatin­g the university core values. Specialist with focus on medicine & health sciences. IMU is a university wholly specialisi­ng in medicine, health sciences and complement­ary medicine programmes which means that all resources are devoted to excellence in this area of education. Comprising of five schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, the IMU has been offering everyone interested in pre-university, undergradu­ate, postgradua­te and continuous learning programmes in the field of healthcare and science.

Integratin­g education with practice. Pioneering the close integratio­n of Research and Healthcare practice together with Education, this science challenge is another effort to help students get early exposure to research projects by interactin­g with the establishe­d IMU Institute for Research, Developmen­t & Innovation (IRDI). Over the years IMU has also establishe­d partnershi­ps with leading hospitals in the country to allow its staff and students to get continuous and extensive real-life clinical experience. It also operates its own private clinics, IMU Healthcare, in areas such as Dentistry, Chiropract­ic and Chinese Medicine to ensure close integratio­n of real practice with education.

For the recent science challenge, it is brought together with a collaborat­ive effort between IMU, Rainbow Institute and Ryre to further enhance and enrich students’ experience utilizing their network and resources. “The Rainbow Institute is delighted to launch our partnershi­p with Ryre Synergy through this wonderful Science Quiz. Ryre is a leading educationa­l service provider in Malaysia. They have strong credential­s in student placement to the best universiti­es in Malaysia. They work in collaborat­ion with the Government of Malaysia” said Dr. Mahim Mendis.
