Nishangan is men’s singles champion

Fourth seeded Nishangan Nadarajah emerged the men’s singles champion of the 102nd Colombo Championsh­ips when he defeated fancied and second seeded Sankha Athukorala in the final played in the morning at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.

Nishanjan had to pull out all resources available before pulling off a 2-1 victory as after conceding the first set came back to take the second and third set to emerge champion.

Meanwhile Sankha Athukorala who has had an unlucky run even though being top seeded in most the events he participat­ed but coming out a loser will have his last opportunit­y of clinching a title.

Sankha along with Yasitha de Silva overcame the pair of Roston Ali and Muneer Hussein in the doubles semi-final played in the afternoon session yesterday to qualify to the final.

Sankha and Yasitha will now meet second seeded Heera Ashiq and Tanveer Ashiq in the final scheduled to be played at 12.30 p.m. today. Nishangan Nadarajah beat Sankha Athukorala 2-1 (2/6, 7/6(11), 6/3). Sankha Athukorala/Yasitha de Silva beat Roston Ali/Muneer Hussein 2-0 (6/4, 7/6(1).
