Review IELTS Workshop July 1, 2017
The IELTS workshop held at Hotel Renuka on July 1, 2017 was a success. The participants were personally interviewed by the Resource Person and their objectives were met successfully. Four different types of participants were identified as ( i) Prospective candidates for the IELTS Test who have applied for Academic and General components ( ii) Those who wanted to go through an English language improvement experience ( iii) Candidates who had no knowledge of IELTS and wanted to be familiar with it. ( iv) A large number of teachers who wished to be equipped with the knowhow of how to start their own IELTS classes. After a careful quick needs analysis the sessions of the workshop were meticulously prioritized and the sessions were conducted with a plethora of strategies to reach the objectives of the clientele.
The sessions were started with personal interviews assessing the speaking ability of the participants. They were immediately related to the requirements of the IELTS speaking component. The language skills of Listening and Speaking were inte- grated and the sessions to develop them were conducted with famous songs, renderings, recitations and conversations. The participants were actively involved in the activities and it was a very interesting session. All the participants did a comprehensive listening test and listening as a skill was discussed at length to raise awareness of the requirements of IELTS listening abilities with a variety of text types.
A comprehensive handout was distributed covering IELTS components with examinations tips. The participants engaged in writing a report of the Task 1 Writing of the Academic Component of IELTS and it was corrected immediately and session of error analysis was done spontaneously.
The language ability of Reading was done as the last session. Reading strategies were discussed with different text types and different reading techniques and the participants were engaged in reflective reading. The feedback forms with the candid opinion of the participants proved that the workshop was a great success. The personal objectives of each and every participant identified at the beginning, were achieved and with the suggestions made by the participants for a lot of follow up sessions the workshop concluded very successfully.

I initially wanted to Australia for my higher studies after A/Levels. Since I am the only child and had no experience living on my own, my parents were afraid to send me abroad. Fortunately, I came across ANC which offered the option to complete two years of my degree here in Sri Lanka and transfer to a university of my choice in the US – which gave me enough time to get prepared for US education. Opting to transfer to a university in the US is one of the best decisions I made in my life. As I said, in my area of study and in many similar study areas, the research strength of the program is paramount. American universities invest a lot on research and it was worth going to study in the US. The experience as well as the education I received in the US, have transformed my life in many ways.
What plans do you have for the future?
Once I complete my PhD, I wish to obtain my MD degree which is a doctorate awarded to clinicians who have undertaken an extended period of scientific research. This will give me the opportunity to receive recognition for my research work and continue my research on Alzheimer’s disease to help patients suffering from the disease to overcome various challenges.
