Kandy schools to the fore

- By Aubrey Kuruppu Results at Pallekelle:

It’s the tail-end of the Rugby season, but the Milo All Island Ten-a- side tournament for the Under Sixteen’s attracted a large number of entries. The outcome was that the SLSRFA was forced to look for two venues to work off the tournament. The Trinity Stadium in Pallekelle and the Digana Provincial Sports Complex were the ultimate choices.

As expected, some of the Kandy schools (Dharmaraja, Kingswood and Vidyartha) were in the fore-front. Vidyartha’s close win over the Josephians was one of the highlights. The Joes had earlier whipped the Matale Thomians by a massive 68-0 margin. The lads from Matale suffered another 0-62 beating at the hands of Vidyartha.

The Peterites overcame all four opponents with ease. St. Peter’s bt Benedict’s 26-7; bt Mahanama 27-0; bt Royal Panadura 32-0; bt Piliyandala 20-5. Vidyartha bt St. Sylvester’s 17-12; bt St. Thomas’ Matale 62-0; bt St. Joseph’s 22-9. Dharmaraja bt Lumbini 19-0; bt Carey 36-0. Kingswood bt Maliyadeva 24-7; bt St. Anthony’s 24-5. St. Peter's bt St. Thomas’ Matale 68-0; bt St. St. Sylvester’s 26-7; Lost to Vidyartha 19-22. Piliyandala Central bt Mahanama 10-0; Piliyandala Central (also in the same group) was able to prevent Mahanama and Royal Panadura from crossing their line.

Kingswood, whose junior rugby is quite outstanding, had a good win over the Katugastota Anthonians. For good measure, they also won over Maliyadeva quite comfortably. bt Royal Panadura 17-0; lost to St. Peter’s 5-20. St. Anthony’s bt Maliyadeva 14-5; lost to Kingswood 5-24. Royal bt Eheliyagoda MV 34-0; bt Prince of Wales 20-0; bt Mahinda 24-0. Trinity bt Sumangala 33-0; bt Ananda 29-0. St. John’s Nugegoda bt Prince of Wales 12-0; bt Mahinda 26-0. Wesley bt Moratu Vidyalaya 50-0; bt Richmond 29-0. Science bt Nalanda 26-0; bt Lalith Athulathmudali 33-0.

Wesley were able to keep their line uncrossed against Richmond and Moratu Vidyalaya while running up big scores themselves.

As things stand, Trinity, Royal, Science, Wesley, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, Kingswood and St. Peter’s should feature in the competition today.
