She is sure stand out in a crowd because of her quiet and observant nature. She is shy and reluctant to talk despite having so much to say about herself. Presently an undergraduate at the prestigious Manipal University in India,Malshi was a past pupil at the Horizon College where she was awarded a full scholarship due to her academic excellence and was the top ranker in the Maths stream at her A/Ls examination.
It was when we spoke of why she chose medicine over a more comfortable career path with engineering that she was more vocal and I was able to see the passionate individual who so desperately wanted to be an ambassador for the poverty- stricken children of Sri Lanka.
Below are the excerpts from the interview with MalshiWijethunga…
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURSUE MEDICINE?
I believe twining program between India and Malaysia provides more opportunities to explore and experience. I have not heard of a similar programme in place at any other university. All of us are looking forward to being able to be a part of all the excitement that is sure to come our way.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING OVERSEAS EDUCATION?
It is very important to have correct and timely information and assistance about anything that concerns your journey, it can vary from visa matters to miscellaneous items but in that time and mind set it is very important to be able to access all. I have full confidence in the services offered by PATHE and that is why I would suggest students who seek career guidance to visit PATHE and if you’re lucky you will be directed to Naushad. He is the best! Though all other councillors have been nothing but helpful, I have worked with him and I know he will give you his fullest support.
FUTURE ASPIRATIONS?
My goals and reasons for practicing medicine and paediatrics have changed over time but Paediatrics is a fun and exciting field to be in. It is also challenging and provides many opportunities. The patients I will meet are the best of their kind I’m sure!
