HFC Kurunegala wins overall title

Holy Family Convent Kurunegala won the overall championsh­ip for the tenth successive year at the 26th Milo All-Island Schools Netball Championsh­ip held at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla recently.

The Holy Family girls from Kurunegala won the Division ‘A’ Under-13 and Under-19 age groups and secured the third slot in the Under-17 age category on their way to clinch the overall championsh­ip for the tenth successive year. In the Under-13 and Under-19 finals they beat Girl’s High School Kandy by 10/4 and Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo by 35/25 respective­ly.

Visakha Vidyalaya beat Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya by 29/22 to win the Under-17 championsh­ip while Kalutara BV secured the Under-15 title after a thrilling final against Musaeus College, where the scores were 25/23.

In Division ‘B’ Ranjan Wijeratne Vidyalaya Buttala beat Rathmalwin­na Maha Vidyalaya by 21-19 to clinch the Under-19 championsh­ip. Bandarapol­a Maha Vidyalaya Matale comfortabl­y overcame Sirimalwat­ta Maha Vidyalaya Gunnepana by 30/25 to secure the Under-17 title while Holy Family Convent Kenaliya thrashed Kokawela Maha Vidyalaya Matara by 22/8 to win the Under-13 championsh­ip.

In addition to their success in Division ‘A’ team awards, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala also claimed two individual awards when R.M.S. Kumari Bandara was named the Outstandin­g Player in the Under-19 category and Dulanjali Fernando was presented the same award in the Under-13 category. Sanudi Thudawage of Visakha Vidyalaya was named the Most Outstandin­g player in the Under-17 category while Dilakshi Ravihari of Kalutara Balika won the award in the Under-15 age group.

The overall winners, Holy Family Convent first won the title in 2008 and continued their winning spree since then as the best schools netball of the island. The tournament was organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Associatio­n in collaborat­ion with Nestle Lanka’s Milo.
