Gateway College secures best delegation award at NYMUN 2017

The second session of the National Youth Model United Nations ( NYMUN) was held from 25thto the 27th of August 2017. This year’s theme “Youth, Peace and Security” was discussed and debated by nine committees consisting of youth from all over Sri Lanka that included schools and universiti­es. The delegation of Gateway College stood out by winning a total of 14 awards and the coveted Best Delegation award with a cash prize of Rs. 100,000/=.

In the Plenary General A s s e m bl y (GA), Phillip Surendran won the Best Delegate award and Prashen Fernando won both the Higher Commendati­on award and the Best Foreign Policy Statement.

In t he United Nat i o n s Population Fund ( UNFPA), Areeb Atheek won the coveted Best D e l e g a t e aw a r d . R av i n Tilakaratn­e won the Higher Commendati­on award and Kavin Gunasekara was awarded Honorary Mention.

In the World Health Assembly ( WHA), Shaheen Abdul Ghani won a Higher Commendati­on award and Kumal Udamulla secured Honorary Mention.

In the World Food Program (WFP), Tharindhu Peries won the Best Delegate Award and Imaad Muwahid won Honorary Mention. In the Commission of Narcotic Drugs ( CND), Farhan Naushad was awarded Honorary Mention.

The Internatio­nal Court of Justice ( ICJ) saw Isuru Udana Abeysekara secure not only the Best Judge Award but also the Best Foreign Policy Statement. Thinula Karunarath­ne won Honorary Mention in this esteemed committee.

Anish Fonseka won the Best Delegate award at the Security Council (UNSC).

Gateway’s success continues under the able guidance of the Deputy Principal Mr. Anthony Chelliah who is supported by the Head of Key Stage 4 Mrs Ashra Shibly and the Teacher in charge Mrs Mystica Wanigaseka­ra. The alumni of Gateway College MUN Club as always, ensures that the unity and team spirit is maintained and developed.
