COINS kicks off this week

Dr. Dharmasena Pathiraja’s newest film ‘Swaroopa’ (Self Image) based on Franz Kafka’s story ‘Metamorpho­sis’ will be released in theatres around the country on September 8. The film will be released at Regal Colombo and a few other theatres in the suburbs.

‘Swaroopa’ narrates the story of Gregory Samson and his family of father, mother, sister assisted by a maid within the social transforma­tions taking place in late colonial and early postcoloni­al Sri Lanka.

The 3rd Colombo Internatio­nal Student Film Festival ( COINS), the only internatio­nal students film festival hosted by the Digital Film Academy of Sri Lanka Foundation ( SLF.- DFA) will be held from September 7 to 9 in Colombo.

Organized by the final year students of the Higher National Diploma in Film and TV and VFX 3D Animation, the festival will comprise of three day sessions with workshops on TV and film travelling salesman for a pharmaceut­ical company. He is the main provider of the family.

Among his expenses Gregory bears the bulk of the financial responsibi­lities for the rent of the apartment, the violin lessons for his sister, and the general upkeep of the family. As a young medical representa­tive who has to travel a lot, he forms relationsh­ips in his travels which do not seem to be lasting. One fine morning Gregory wakes up to find himself transforme­d into a giant insect.

The film stars W. Jayasiri, Nita Fernando, Thusitha Laknath, Reeni de Silva, Daya Tennakone, Wimal Kumara de Costa, Lakshman Mendis, making, techno- exhibition and screenings of selected local and internatio­nal turns. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony where deserving students will receive 15 awards of excellence from an Internatio­nal Jury of distinguis­hed filmmakers.

Behind the screen cinematogr­aphy is by Donald Karunarath­na, editor Elmo Halide and musical score is by Nadeeka Guruge that create a platform to introduce new talent to the world of cinema. Started in April 2011, COINS film fest created a meeting ground for both local and internatio­nal young filmmakers. The second festival was held in 2014. About 700 participan­ts took part in the maiden 2011 COINS film festival and the film workshop was conducted by the acclaimed cinematogr­apher M.D Mahindapal­a and Sri Lankan filmmaker Boodee Keerthisen­a.
