-

Special needs children will showcase their talents at a major celebration of Children’s Day to be held on September 30 and October 1 near Lake Gregory and at the Hakgala Botanical Gardens in Nuwara Eliya by the Senehasa Education, Resource, Research and Information Centre (SERRIC).

The Chief Guests at the event will be the Education Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the State Minister of Education, V.S. Radhakrishnan and the State Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardene.

The celebrations will be held with the assistance of the Open University of Sri Lanka, the Tri-Forces, the Police and the Civil Security Department.

SERRIC, based at Narahenpita in Colombo, provides services beyond the academic programme to children with special needs both of parents in the security forces and those in civil society.

With well-trained personnel in special education, SERRIC aims at the holistic development of the special child which includes behavioural management, inter-personal skills and spiritual development. Among the services provided are physiotherapy, music and movement lessons, parent-teacher resources.

SERRIC was founded by Anoma Fonseka, wife of Minister and former Army Commander, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

The Children’s Day event will enable interaction between society and children with special needs, while focusing on the challenges they face. The organizers hope this will bring about changes in national policy which would enable special children to take their rightful place in society.
