Undergraduates of Horizon Campus shine with research publications

-

Research is the ultimate process to discover, explain and assess new knowledge and concepts. If not for research, a relevant and modern curriculum will be non-existent. Research benefits many industries.Even top rated corporate institutions bear a high cost forResearch and Developmentas it is critical to product innovation and in improvising services. The key component of a research is the Researcher, the individual directly involved in research activities.Research oriented undergraduate education in science is considered as a vitalcomponent in the 21st century.

When it comes to Science, in order to have all aspects of professional scientific culture, a student should be exposed to research methodologies along with subsequent steps after completing a research. Peer reviewing and publishing of a scientific article in a reputed science journal or in an international conference is one of the highest milestone an undergraduate student can achieve.

Horizon campus has taken necessary steps to develop the research components of the Undergraduate students who enrols for a degree under Faculty of Science on B.Sc (Hons) in Biotechnology awarded by Nilai University, Malaysia. Undergraduates follow a module termed Research methods and design which demonstrates the pathway to select the suitable research design in either field or lab for dissertation research focusing on current issues.. Plus, the module provides a review of the research design process and will result in each student developing their own research proposal.

Well-equipped, state of the art laboratories for Bioscience, Tissue culture and Chemistry provides stu- dents an excellent platform and a workspace to pursue their research imagination into reality. With highly academically decorated faculty members as supervisors, the research life of an undergraduate becomes properlysteered towards success.

With proper mentoring and guiding, together with the dedication of the undergraduate students, Horizon Campus was able to grab the limelight of recently held international conferences.

Ms. Deluxy David of Biotechnology Program presented her research findings at “Asia-Pacific Conference on Multidisciplinary Research 2017 (APMR2017)” under the track “Physical and Life Science” and received the second place for the best oral presentation (student category). Her research was on Improvement of Nutritional content of Yoghurt using Seaweeds which is an innovative and novel approach in Food Technology.

Ms. Menu Perera was selected to conduct an oral presentation at the International conference on Nutritional and Genetic Epidemiology 2017 (GEN 2017).Her scientific article on “Producing acereal bar using Black Grams (Vignamungo) as the main ingredient” will be published accordingly.

Mr. LakshanYatiwela together with Ms. DanushikaNayomi also presented their research work at the 4th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Approaches held in Sri Lanka. Their study was on “Antibacterial activity of aqueous extracts of Zanthoxylumrhetsa. ROXBagainst Methicillin ResistantStaphylococcus aureus and Evaluation of Radical Scavenging Activity” with relevance to Medical microbiology field.

Ms. Tarinija Gopalakrishnan presented her research work at International Conference on Drug Discovery and Development bearing the title “Antibacterial activity against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) and selected pharmacology properties of “panchawalkala”: an ayuruvedic formulation” which combines Natural products and microbiology fields.

Behind every achiever there are Faculty members who devoted their time and energy to lead them to success. Mr. Priyanga Dharmaratne, Ms. Shanika Gamage together with the guidance of Dr.Lekha Wanasekeraproved the high standards at Horizon Campus. Moreover, students were given the opportunities in applying the outcome of their research for the development of the Nation.

To witness and explore the holistic environment of the Horizon Campus premises an Open Day is scheduled for 30th September from 9 am onwards at the Campus. As the next intake is on October it will be a great opportunity for science enthusiastic individuals to see what the campus is all about.
