Laser Run City Tour ends successful­ly

The 2nd edition of the Laser Run City Tour - Sri Lanka, was successful­ly concluded at Independen­ce Square, Colombo, with over 200 athletes taking part in the elite, Under (U)-19, U-15 and U-11 age groups.

Athletes from Georgia, France, India, Russia, Nigeria, the Great Britain, Egypt and Sri Lanka took part the games.

Meanwhile the following Lankans athletes have come into the world rankings of the sport.

They are (Senior women) Anuruddika Gunathilak­a (Air Force), Kumari Dasanayake (Air Force), Malkanthi Mudalige (Air Force) and their respective world rankings are -- 5,6 and 7.

(Senior men) A.S. Nilaweera (Air Force), Chaminda Priyadarsh­ana (Air Force), Suranga Nuwankumar­a (Navy) and Lakmal Perera (Army). Their respective world rankings are -- 9,10,11 and 12.

It was heartening to see children from rural schools and from leading schools in Colombo taking part together. Twenty-four medals in three age groups and an Elite category were awarded. Final results of Elite Internatio­nal Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) category will be sent for World ranking. So far local athletes have been entered into the world ranking list and will be accumulate­d their points by adding this event results. This time too there was a huge response to the call for volunteers, from different strata of society. This augurs well for spreading the news about modern pentathlon in the event. Two Universiti­es -University of Moratuwa and the University of Sri Jayawarden­apuratook part in the event, not only by having athletes taking part, but also having stalls at the event to educate athletes and spectators about scientific approaches to sports attire, Biological Measuremen­ts, Health and Training tips. Modern Pentathlon -- combinatio­n of five different events constitute­s the most demanding sport of the Olympic Games. Pentathlet­es competed in the following 5e discipline­s- Fencing, Swimming, Riding and a combined event of Shooting & Running.

This Sport is now being introduced to Sri Lanka by the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka (MPFSL), which is affiliated to the UIPM and the Asian Modern Pentathlon Confederat­ion (AMPC)

The UIPM Laser Run is the new sporting category of the UIPM started in 2015, combining by laser, shooting and running, and launched the first edition of the Laser Run City Tour worldwide in 2017.

Sri Lanka, as one of the host countries, holds the UIPM Laser Run City Tour , and it is listed under the UIPM Internatio­nal calendar, which is fully supported by UIPM. T.G.H.N.
