Rakindu wins his 3rd silver medal in Nepal

Rakindu Randiv Wickramara­thna, a grade 10 student from Nalanda College, won the Silver medal at the 6th Asia Pacific Young Scientist [ APCYS] Conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal from November 1-5. The conference was hosted by the Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology [ Recast], Taibhuvan University . The conference was organized by Nepal Polymer Institute [NPL] and Brainycube Research Organizati­on in Nepal.

Rakindu won this medal for the Research title ‘In Vitro Anti - pooliferat­ive effects’ of the Nalanda orientalis fouit on endometria­l earcinoma [AN3CA] cells ’. This is the first time a Sri Lankan student participat­ed at this conference and won a medal at the APCYS. This year’s conference was held under the motto ‘ Young scientist - Our strength, our Hope’.

The conference attracted the participat­ion of nearly 200 young scientists who presented their research publicatio­ns . There were participan­ts from Russia , China , Slovenia , India , Malayasia , Indoonisia , Thailand , Philippine­s , Sri Lanka and Nepal.

‘BAKINI ‘ is the name we normally use for the Nanelea orientails, fruit . Rakindu tried to figure out if there is any anti - cancer effect in this fruit .

Dr. Sameera R. Samarakoon at the institute of Moleculer Biology, Bio technology and Biochemist­ry supervised his research. Scientist Ms Nuwanka Abeysinghe and scientist Kalum Rathnayake offered help for this finding

Earlier, Rakindu won a silver medal at the 24th Internatio­nal conference of young Scientist [PCYS] in Stuttgart Germany. That was the first time int he history of PCYS that a Sri Lankan students won a medal .

Last July he won another silver medal at the 1st Internatio­nal RMC young Scientist Conference held in Malayasia. Two students from Nalanda College won medals at the same competitio­n.

With this silver medal Rakindu has gathered 3 silver medals for mother Lanka within one calender year.

Rakindu offers his greatest gratitude to D.R.Sameera R Samarakoon, Ms. Nuwanka Abeysingha and Mr. Kalum Rathnayake for their guidance given. He also thanks Mrs. Renuka Jayasumdor­a for providing him with the air tickets. He also thanked Mr. Tilak Wattuhewa, Principal of Nalanda College and Ms. Pramitha Galapattht­hi .

His gratitude also goes to his class teacher Mrs Upeksha Abeysekara, teacher -in-charge of research, the prefect guild of Nalanda College and at last but not least his parents.
