Sir Ivor Jennings’ statue unveiled at Peradeniya University
Last Wednesday a life size statue of Sir Ivor Jennigns, the founder Vice Chancellor of t he University of Peradeniya was installed in the campus.
This was to mark the 75th anniversary of University Education in the country, commencing in 1942.
Rebcca Sarah Caine, a granddaughter of Sir Ivor Jennings graced the occasion as chief guest.
Amidst a tightly packed crowd at the meeting in the Arts Theatre, emeritus professor Prof. K. N. O. Dharmadas gave the keynote address. Prof K.M.de S i l va , the Chancellor of t he university, highlighted the great service done by Sir I vo r Je n n i n g s to university education of the country and his contribution in drafting the first independent Constitution and several books on various subjects, including economics.
The presentation of a coffee table book named Garden University of Peradeniya which was d eve l o p e d by the university’s two alumni -Mohamed Zuhyle, former ambassador to Kuwait, and Dr.R.M.K. Ratnayake, a for mer ministry secretary. The book presents the rare architectural character, some of the historical monuments of the country, photographs of great personalities who c o n t r i buted to the f o r ma t i o n of the University and brief narrations of t he f aculties, places of religious worship and other details.
