MAS Holdings show their mettle

MAS Holdings took grip of the Mercantile Tennis Tournament 2017, winning the annual event with an overwhelmi­ng total of 142 points. The tournament, the last of Sri Lanka Tennis Associatio­n's (SLTA) annual calendar, was held at the Greenpath courts over eight days from December 3 to 10.

Overall winners MAS Holdings were clear winners of the competitio­n having obtained 142 points against the total of 38, gained by second placed Althico. The clear deficit of 104 points makes them the comfortabl­e winners of this year's edition of the tournament.

MAS gained 30 points in the Women's Singles and 25 points each in Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles and a further 18 points in Over-35 Singles. They claimed 15 points from the Women's Doubles and 14 points off Men's Division III while earning six points and five points in Men's Division II and Division I segments respective­ly. They also claimed three points each in Over-45 Singles and Over-35 Doubles.

Althico, in the meantime, earned 25 points from the Men's Doubles and 10 points off Men's Division I and three from Men's

Renuka Wickramasi­nghe (Pan Asia Bank) and Gayathri Fernando (Shore to Shore) beat Thilini Leeniyagol­la (MAS) and Sherene Wijesingha (MAS)

Mewan Gajadeera (MAS) and Thilini Leeniyagol­la (MAS) beat Guyanga Weeraseker­a (Jinasena) and Renuka Wickramasi­nghe (Pan Asia Bank) and Sohan Patrick (MAS) and Sherene Wijesinghe (MAS)

Kushal Division II. The overall third place went to Livinro, who obtained 31 points in total from Over-35 Doubles (12), Over-35 Singles (10) and Over-45 Singles (9). They edged out Pan Asia Bank by a point in overall standings.

In addition to claiming the Overall Championsh­ip, MAS Holdings also won the Most Outstandin­g Team award for their performanc­es as a unit. However they were able to claim wins in the Men's Division III and Mixed Doubles segments while the wins of other nine segments were divided among nine different teams. A total of 25 teams competed at the Mercantile Tennis Tournament as the SLTA competitio­ns for 2017 came to a close.
