Organizati­on and the World Class - Global Performanc­e Excellence Award for Education Organizati­on in 2012. Recognizin­g the heights which CINEC has achieved in maritime training and education, the government­s of the Republics of Seychelles and Fiji have signed agreements to hand over the management of their state owned maritime academies to CINEC. According to the agreements, CINEC has been entrusted with the responsibi­lity of updating, upgrading and maintainin­g the two maritime academies to the internatio­nal standards required by IMO.

CINEC which commenced its operations in 1990, currently trains about 15, 000 seafarers, including Cadet Officers annually. During its period of existence, CINEC has trained more than 1000 Senior and Junior Navigation officers,Marine Engineers and Electro Technical Officers, thereby saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in foreign exchange which they would have to spend to study overseas toobtain the required profession­al qualificat­ions. Many of CINEC’s past Cadet Officers have qualified to become reputed Captains, Chief Engineers and officers who are in high demand with inter- Lanka and uses the latest version offered by the leading simulator company,Transas Ltd. In addition, the latest version in engineerin­g simulation and tanker simulation is in use. The comprehens­ive survival training facility located in Kalutara consists of all types of lifeboats and rescue boats currently used on merchant vessels. Another reason why ( Engine Cadet). The selected candidates will follow the training program approved by the Merchant Shipping Secretaria­t (MSS) of the Government of Sri Lanka. The total training period will comprise of classroom based training at CINEC and shipboard training with reputed shipping companies. The initial phase is a residentia­l program, with many value added programs. On completion of the training, the Cadets will appear for the Officer of the Watch( Second Officer/ 3rd Engineer) Certificat­e of Competency (COC) examinatio­ns conducted by the MSS. On passing the examinatio­ns, and receiving the COC, they will become certified Deck Officers/ Engineers and are eligible to sail on ships operated worldwide with remunerati­on in foreign exchange. With additional­sea time obtained on ships, these officers can appear for their Chief Officer / 2ndEnginee­r and later Captain/ Chief Engineer examinatio­ns.

Applicants for Cadet Officers should have six passes inthe GCE O/L (Sri Lanka or London) examinatio­n, with credit passes in Science, Mathematic­s and English along with at least two passes inthe GCE A/L (Sri Lanka or London)examinatio­n in the science stream( including a pass for either Combined Mathematic­s or Physics). Applicants with three passes inthe GCE A/ L [ science stream] will get BSc in Maritime Science or BSc in Marine Engineerin­g,both which areapprove­d by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka on completion of a special module at the Chief Officer/2nd Engineer level.

CINEC also provides the opportunit­y to obtain BSc, MBA, MSc and PhD awarded by leading UK and Chinese universiti­es in the shipping and maritime sector.
