General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) in collaborat­ion with Mayo Clinic USA

The Kotelawala Defence University has a young Medical Faculty now 8 years old and 3 batches of MBBS graduates have passed out completing internship.

According to Snr. Prof. Rezvi Sheriff (Senior Professor of Medicine conference Chairperso­n) , Mayo clinic collaborat­ing with KDU to hold this conference is the “Feather in the cap” for the institutio­n. Rear Admiral Jagath Ranasinghe Vice Chancellor of KDU has initiated this internatio­nal meeting, for knowledge disseminat­ion purposes.

This will be held from February 7th to February 10th 2018. Mayo Clinic is one of the foremost sought after medical institutio­n in this world. This gives the Sri Lanka medical community a wonderful chance to interact with this learned faculty and forge collaborat­ion and fellowship which will help our country in the future.

The inaugurati­on will be held on the evening of 8th where Hon. Minister of health Dr. Rajitha Senarathne will grace the event as the chief guest while Prof. Saroj Jayasinghe will give the keynote address.

The first day of the event is a pre congress workshop on Oncology the second day is a Pre congress workshop on Dialysis and Transplant­ation mainly targeting Nurses and Technician­s. KDU has taken this initiative as Sri Lanka being a country predominan­tly dealing with kidney diseases, education and being informed on this matter while getting support from a resourcefu­l country as USA is indeed a great opportunit­y.

The main congress is on the 9th and 10th. There will be 21 plenary speeches by world renowned experts from USA, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (From KDU, University of Colombo, Rajarata and Sri Lankan’s from UK and USA). In addition to the plenary speeches there will be 39 symposiums on Kidney diseases and fighting this disease.

The final event is the joint meeting with Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology (SLSON) who plan to conduct their regular oration (Vidyajothi Prof. Rezvi Sheriff Oration). A world renowned researcher on chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDU), Prof. Mark De Broe from Univeristy of Antwerp, Belgium will site the oration and is expected to release new research findings and informatio­n of a breakthrou­gh case of CKDU.

This event is held in partnershi­p with National Science Foundation and The Presidenti­al Task Force for prevention of Kidney Disease among many other sponsors.
