Future pathway for medical doctors

-

Medicine offers over seventy different clinical specializations and this means students are offered the opportunity toexperience and progressively develop a personal interest in a subject that truly compliments their skill set. There is no limit for what you can achieve with this job. In terms of a career as well as a life in a broader sense. As a medical practitioner you are in a position to instil morality in society and drive it believing in a better life for all while creating a comfortable life style for you and your loved ones and to take up this challenge would mean to truly live by the Hippocratic Oath.

For some medicine is a personal calling. They became a physician because they want to heal people and be of service, but to some, more emphasis lays on having a lucrative career where they can earn a substantial income and the social status that follows a successful career. Irrespective of whatever that motivates them to consider medicine as a career it is important that they are given a platform to pursue their doctor dream. In Sri Lanka the demand for public medical education has not ceased to increase in the recent past years despite the state universities being unable to cope with the growing figure of entitled applicants. The limited opportunities in state medical faculties have compelled the majority of students who aspire to be doctors to seek universities abroad. At present, a mere 20% of the eligible candidates who pass the General Certificate of Education, Advanced level are chosen for University admission to read for the accessible undergraduate programmes and the rest have been compelled to choose other fields of study or seek prospects overseas.

At present there is much debate around placement options available to local students who seek to pursue a medical career therefore the need for reliable career guidance is indeed a dire need of the hour. In Sri Lanka there are approximately 20 institutions that offer overseas university placements. Among them there is one institution that is in the forefront of the industry and continues to be its undisputed market leader.
