Chilaw Marians gets closer to the league title
Chilaw Marians has put themselves in line to clinch the Premier Tier A league title as they were in a strong position against SSC when play was in progress in the second session of proceedings on day three in the match being played at the CCC ground.
The two teams are battling for the 2017/18 league title. With just over four sessions of play left the Marians are having the edge. They have a mammoth lead and most probably they would bat the last session too and it’s going to be a daunting task for SSC to reach a target of over 450 runs on the final day.
The third day’s proceedings saw Marians’ star Shehan Jayasuriya proving his allround capabilities. Jayasuriya who made a ton in the first innings and followed it with a four-wicket haul and another superb knock of 88 runs in the second innings. He was also responsible in putting on two useful partnerships -- 71 runs for the second wicket with Oshada Fernando and 68 runs for the third wicket with Sachithra Serasinghe.
Later Rukshan Fernando and Risith Upamal was associated in an unbroken 89 runs for the fifth wicket with the Marians sitting pretty on 260 for 4 helping the side to stretch the lead to 400 runs so far.
Colts CC were struggling for survival against NCC in their match at the Galle Stadium. Colts CC resuming their second innings from their overnight score of 29 for 2 and needing 492 runs to avoid an innings defeat was in a bad position of 144 for 4.
NCC amassed a score of 618 for 9 declared which came on the back of tons made by Lahiru Udara, Bhanuka Rajapakse, Mahela Udawatte and skipper Angelo Perera.
SLPA CC struck back after conceding a first innings lead to Saracens SC as they had their opponents struggling on 101 for 8 just before the tea break on the second day in the match played at the SSC ground.
