For 11 years in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Model United Nations commonly known as ‘SLMUN’ has created an atmosphere for young and radical world changers, who not only talk about changing the world but also come together to see the problem and be driven to find a solution to the problem. SLMUN is of the firm belief that change comes from the youth. Understanding that the future of the world rests in the hands of the youth, the theme for SLMUN 2018 is ‘Redefining Global Diplomacy’ and is aimed at the future generations of world leaders to think radically and engage together in diplomatic efforts. This year SLMUN provides a platform for those daring enough to change the world to debate, voice out and formulate their radical ideas on diplomacy through diplomatic perspective and compromise, into solutions that will change the course of the world.

Why you should you join SLMUN 2018?

At the very outset itself, the chief aim of SLMUN is to provide students a platform to engage in debate about issues in the world in a diplomatic way. In short, it enables you to make your voice heard. Apart from the usual hype that surrounds the conference, SLMUN strives to make you more assertive and confident about yourself. It helps you to understand the problems that global leaders face while making decisions and enables you to envision yourself as a future leader. This year, SLMUN will be focusing on diplomacy where delegates will be made to ‘think out of the box’ in an effort to comply solutions to the problems at hand.

What’s new with SLMUN this year?

SLMUN 2018 comes together with the objective of catering to current world problems and moulding the delegates mind towards coming up with feasible solutions. From its inception itself it has been the foremost in the minds of everyone who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this conference happen. However, this year SLMUN attempts to come back bigger, better and larger than ever before. There are several new committees introduced to cover a wider range of topics and formulate solutions for a vaster range of current global issues. Such committees are International Organization for Migration (IOM), ESCAP and WIPO.

Why SLMUN is highly recommended for first time MUNers?

SLMUN’s main objective is to spread the concept of Model UN far and wide around Sri Lanka. Keeping in line with the objective, SLMUN conducts various workshops island wide. These workshops are a great place to start learning about the concept of Model UN, and are highly recommended for first time MUNers! During the workshops, delegates are also given the opportunity to ask any queries they have from the Executive Committee,

SLMUN has conducted 2 workshops already for 2018, in Colombo and Kiribathgoda, and will be conducting more workshops island wide. For details on the future workshops, please check out the social media pages of Sri Lanka Model United Nations.
