Asian Internatio­nal Academy launches its Law faculty

Offers LLB honours degree by the University of London, UK

Opening up more avenues to Sri Lankan students interested in following a law degree, Asian Internatio­nal Academy (Aia) is set to offer a three-yearBritis­h LLB (Hons) Law degree from the prestigiou­s University of London, UK. Headed by RetiredSup­reme Court judge Justice S.I. Imam, the law faculty of Aiais well-equipped with LLB qualified educators who are practising lawyers with ample experience in guiding students as lecturers.Once the students at Aia successful­ly complete their degree, they will be able to sit for the Attorney-at-Law examinatio­n conducted by the Sri Lanka Law College. Students who are interested in following the Law degree at Aia can obtain student loans up to 75 percent from NDB bank. Aia allows students to pay the affordable university fee in installmen­ts.

Speaking about the importance of the addition of a law faculty to the academy, Justice S.I .Imam, Head of faculty-explains, “With the opening of the law faculty, Aia students obtain the opportunit­y to achieve the LLB qualificat­ion. We’ve had the warm and enthusiast­ic support of the local law profession­als in our endeavors so far and we look forward to working closely with this community as we develop our law courses. We are very ambitious, and are looking to expand our law faculty rapidly over the coming years.”

Justice S.I. Imam practised law in Kandy for 6 years before joining the bench and joined the Judicial Service of Sri Lanka in as a magistrate in 1980. He continued his illustriou­s career serving in different parts of the island as a magistrate before being promoted as a District judge, a High Court judge, an Appeal court judge and subsequent­ly a Supreme Court judge. He was a member of the Judicial Service Commission and served as the President of the well-known ‘Inoka Sewanddi Trial at Bar case’.He also functioned as the chairman of the land acquisitio­n board of review and the Administra­tive AppealsTri­bunal.Having been nominated by the Judicial Service Commission, Justice S.I . Imam has participat­ed in numerous legal seminars locally and internatio­nally. Enriching his legal expertise further, Justice S.I .Imam took part in training programmes in Commercial Law at the Internatio­nal Developmen­t and Legal Organizati­on (IDLO) in Rome, Italy. Justice S.I.Imam holds a certificat­e of achievemen­t from the University of Stafford, California, USA.

Speaking further he said, “Given the LLB qualified lectures panel that we have, I am confident that we will be able to achieve a 100 percent pass rate in the first year itself.”

The class structure of the programme involves group classes of 20 students per class which will allow students to engage in a more interactiv­e learning environmen­t and enable lecturers to provide more personaliz­ed guidance to each student.
