All the world’s a stage

The 7th Colombo Internatio­nal Theatre Festival (CITF) organised by the Inter Act Art Organizati­on will be held from May 24 -30 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, Colombo 7.

Held annually for the past six consecutiv­e years, this year will see Austria, Germany, India, Argentina, Kosovo, Turkey and Italy joining hands with Sri Lanka to make this festival rich with cultural diversity and theatrical techniques from around the world.

This year’s festival felicitate­s veteran theatre personalit­y Dharmasiri Bandaranay­ake for his longstandi­ng contributi­on to theatre and commemorat­es the 70th Anniversar­y of the Internatio­nal Theatre Institute (ITI).

The opening ceremony will be held on May 23 and the Colombo Theatre Forum will be on the 24th, 25th and 28th at the Goethe Institute, Colombo. Several workshops conducted by Internatio­nal scholars will take place from May 25 to 30 at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo. The forum will pave the way for both local and internatio­nal directors and artistes to meet and discuss ideologies, future trends and challenges that concern the emerging and experiment­al theatre industry.

The festival will feature ‘Trojan Woman’ a play directed by Dharmasiri Bandaranay­ake on May 24 at 7 p.m.

‘Swings of Love’ directed by M.Safeer, ‘The Diary of a Madman’ by Joy Maisnam from India, ‘Amok’ by Elmaze Nura from Kosovo, ‘Mimdo’s Call’ by Fatma Keçeli from Turkey, ‘ You went away’ by Ed. Hauswirth from Austria, Leaving Ziller Valley by Reinhard Göber from Austria, Mandrágora Circus by Juan Cruz Bracamonte from Argentina, ‘EtherorIri­ka Ethereal Epoch’ by Mrinal Jyoti Goswami from India, ‘Chairs’ by Nimasha Fernando from Sri Lanka, ‘Nilak Balamuda’ by Lakmini Lakshika from Sri Lanka, ‘Birds who forgot how to fly’ by Anne-Kathrin Klatt from Germany/Sri Lanka and ‘Paata’ (Colors) by Nilanka Namal Udumulla from Sri Lanka will be staged at the festival from May 25 to 30. Speaking at a recent news conference, Dharamasir­i Bandaranay­ake said the festival is a perfect time to encourage individual­s to showcase their talents on a recognized platform and to create an opportunit­y for the public to gather knowledge and view world class performanc­es.
