Moratuwa Uni. undergraduates to 'create' electric racing car

-

A group of University of Moratuwa (UoM) undergraduates intend to design, develop and display a prototype of a single seat electric racing car at an international competition to be held in Germany in August this year. This is the first time Sri Lanka is participating in this competition.

The team comprises undergraduates from the Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Depts of the UoM.

The team of undergraduate innovators of the UoM, together with their academic advisers, met Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama recently, when the Minister expressed his appreciation of their initiative.

He said that encouraging and promoting innovations right up to their commercial utilisation in actual work, was essential for the development of the country and that it was his poli- cy to do so, as Minister in charge of Research.

He said, therefore, he will support ventures like the one the students were engaged in and, where necessary, even help to secure funds for such initiatives. He hoped the technological talents displayed in participating in international competitions that will bring credit to the country, will also be used in creating innovations that will advance the country’s development effort. The minister wished the team success at the competition.

Adviser to the project, Dr. Himan Punchihewa, Senior Lecturer, Dr Janaka Gamage, Coordinator of the project, Faculty Adviser Sasiranga de Silva and the undergraduate innovator team of Shehara Perera, Samith Hettiarachchi, Buddhika Kasun, Sanjaya Mallikarachchi and Nimantha Priyamal participated in the discussion.
