'Sitting is the new cancer'
Apple CEO Tim Cook doubles down on views against sedentary living as he reveals every desk at the spaceship HQ can switch to standing at the touch of a button
' Sitting is the new cancer,' announced Apple CEO Tim Cook back in 2015.
For Apple employees, however, that's no longer the case.
The tech boss has announced that all employees at Apple Park will receive standing desks that are likely custom- made.
The desks will allow employees to choose between sitting and standing with the touch of a button.
' We have given all of our employees, 100 percent standing desks. If you can stand for a while, then sit, and so on and so forth, it’s much better for your lifestyle,' Cook said to Bloomberg.
The desks have up and down controls via a button underneath them.
Cook has long touted his beliefs that standing up and getting some movement is important.
In 2015 while discussing the standing reminders that Apple Watch has, he said, ' If I sit for too long, it will actually tap me on the wrist to remind me to get up and move, because a lot of doctors think sitting is the new cancer.'
' Ten minutes before the hour, it will remind you to move. We have a lot of people using the Apple Watch at Apple, and ten minutes before the hour, suddenly they all get up and move. It took a little to get used to, but it’s great,' he finished.
The specific model of desks hasn't been revealed, but employees at Apple get to sit on $ 1,200 Vitra chairs.
Apple Park opened last year and is a $ 5billion campus that holds 12,000 employees.
The building was the brainchild of Steve Jobs, who came up with the design months before his death in 2011.
The parklands offer walking and running paths for employees, plus an orchard, meadow and pond within the ring's interior grounds.
The park includes a 100,000- square- foot
( 9,300- square- meter) research center for staff, secure research and development facilities and more than 9,000 trees.
