Living the American Dream

-

For most Sri Lankan students in America, a career is a large part of the dream. An employment option for F- 1 students such as us Sri Lankan who wish to gain employment in America is the optional training programme (OPT). Students who wish to gain work experience directly related to their field of study, have the opportunities to utilize this privilege.

It is stated that the Optional Practical Training (OPT) employees are becoming an indispensable part of the American workforce. Small and midsized companies are the largest beneficiaries, as just 4 percent of all OPTs work at the 10 largest tech companies in the Fortune 500. (/ www. lexology. com/ library/detail)

Eligibility for OPT

Eligible students may be authorized for up to 12 months total OPT per degree level. OPT can be used during a student’s studies (pre-completion) or immediately after graduation ( post- completion). This employment can be used pre- completion of studies, over the annual vacation or leave term, or post-completion of studies, after the student finishes the degree.

OPT provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge from the academic program completed, to a practical work experience.

Organizations that currently have OPT vacancies include the Bank of America, Burke Williams, Core Logic and Coca Cola.

The Pathway to the Career of your Dreams

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Centre, highly skilled foreign workers are finding jobs under OPT more than ever. The number of graduates working on OPT grew from 28,497 in 2008 to 136,617 in 2014. Nearly half were graduates with STEM – science, technology, engineering, or math – degrees.

Given the growth of the OPT workforce, it is important for human resources professionals to recognize that an increasing number of job hunters will be seeking employment under the program.

Guaranteed Successful Career after Graduation

Gaining a USA education will open doors to the OPT program in America. Through the program, students are given a glimpse of the work life that is in store for them. It will also provide 12 – 36 months of job experience that is invaluable if the American dream is your own!
