Lathikka Niriella Sri Lanka’s top Quizzer for 2018 Olav Bjortomt wins the title Quiz Champion of the World!
Lathikka Niriella re- confirmed his ranking as the best Sri Lankan Quiz player when he became the top scorer among Sri Lankan quizzers who competed with the rest of the world in the 16th Annual World Quizzing Championships, conducted by IQA, Sri Lanka at Royal College Union Skills Centre - on Saturday 2nd June.
Olav Bjortomt of England, who was also the inaugural Quiz Olympiad champion, emerged as the World Quizzing Championship adding to his two world titles in 2013, and 2015.
He was five points clear of the runner-up, the USA’s Steve Perry, and England’s Pat Gibson.
Walter Hall was placed 2nd best in Sri Lanka while Haren Fernando was placed third. In 4th place was Hasini Minuwanpitiya and following her as the 5th ranked was Ronan Hall.
Hasini Minuwanpitiya and Nipunika Wijayaratne were the top two female quizzers from Sri Lanka.
The World Quizzing Championships, is an individual Quiz competition, conducted by the International Quizzing Association (IQA), the world’s premier Quiz organization, headquartered in UK. This year it was conducted among 3000 participants at 125 venues in 40 countries throughout the world.
It is a quiz that is organized around the globe at almost the same time and consists of 240 questions, to be answered by the contestants in a maximum allowed time of 120 minutes. The questions are divided over 8 categories of 30 questions each. The eight categories broadly cover areas of History, Media, World, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, and Sciences.
It was encouraging to note the presence of several young quizzers in Sri Lanka at the contest for the first time this year, in addition to the seniors who have been regularly taking part in this event, thus confirming the keen enthusiasm for quizzing in the country.
IQA Sri Lanka is pleased that they have been able to provide an opportunity for Sri Lankan quizzers to take part in this prestigious event, continuously during the last 11 years.
