Dr Prith Peiris family donates Rs 10 million to COLOMBO YMBA for Medical Students Scholarshi­p Awards

The family of Dr Prith Peiris donated Rs 10 million to the Colombo YMBA in memory of their late Parents Dr M. V. P. Peiris and Mrs Edith Doreen Peiris, for the purpose of supporting the education of Medical Students from the lower income group families attached to the six state Universiti­es. The Colombo YMBA will be establishi­ng a TRUST FUND in the name of his late Parents and the interest earned will be utilized to award Scholarshi­ps to Medical Students monthly basis. The late Dr M. V. P. Peiris was the Minister of Health under the Cabinet of the Late Mr Dudley Senanayake in the 1960’s.

The Colombo YMBA already maintainsa few key TRUST FUND Accounts establishe­d over the years utilizing substantia­l contributi­ons received from various generous donors. The TRUST FUNDS such establishe­d and already operationa­l for the purpose of awarding Scholarshi­ps include Dr D.J. Attygalle Property Trust Fund, Irvin Weerackody Trust Fund, Ajitha de Zoysa Trust Fund, Matilda Hewavisent­hi Trust Fund, Sir Baron Jayatillek­e Trust Fund, Sir Cyril de Zoysa Trust Fund, L.R. Goonetille­ke Trust Fund, Welcome Break UK Tsunami Trust Fund, Erick Amarasingh­e Trust Fund, Dr D.P. Athukorale Trust Fund, D.S.P.S de Silva Trust Fund, D. D. M. Simon Silva Trust Fund, Shrima Jayasekara Tsunami Trust Fund, Solomon Abeyaekara Trust Fund, Sidath Sri Nanadaloch­ana Trust Fund, A.L.D.A. Jayawarden­a Trust Fund, Seetha Athukorale Trust Fund.

Over 450 bright & deserving Undergradu­ates from Samurdhi funded families presently following degree courses in Engineerin­g, Medicine, Law, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Agricultur­e, Arts, Dentistry etc are funded on a monthly basis and the Scholarshi­ps Award value for the year 2018 exceeds Rs 7.50 million. These students are selected in response to the applicatio­ns facilitate­d through respective state Universiti­es and after being individual­ly interviewe­d by the Colombo YMBA, TRUST FUNDS and SKILLS DEVELOPMEN­T COMMITTEE.

The donation of Rs 10.00 million to the Colombo YMBA from Dr Prith Peiris family recently was made a reality with the coordinati­on made by Mrs Chathuri Ranasinghe, current President of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Sri Lanka who is also closely known to the Peiris family.
